Roommates!

BY SARA WINTERBURN
Like many other students, I didn’t know whom I was going to be rooming with when I got to Spain. I was pretty nervous, mainly because living with people you have never even met before seems kind of intimidating.  When we got to the airport and we were given the list of names of the people who would be in our apartment, we were all pretty wary of each other.  Everyone seemed willing to try and make new friendships work.   Once we reached our apartment, we went over a few basic things in the house: allergies, favorite foods, pet peeves, etc.

Over the next weeks after getting to Salamanca, it was interesting finding out how each person lived. Of course there were a few differences among each person, and there were some things we didn’t like about each other.  But once we all discussed our issues with each other, things seemed to function a lot better.  You would be surprised by how understanding everyone will be if you just talk to them about the issues you each have.

AIFS did an amazing job at matching us up with people who they thought would get along, because my roommates and I are now in Week 8 and are dreading leaving each other.  We have all gotten so close and in 2 weeks we won’t be living with each other anymore, seeing each other every single day, worrying about when all of us are leaving and who will be home at what time.  The time I have spent here with these girls is a time I will never forget.  I love my roommates like they are my own family, and I couldn’t have chosen a better group of girls to live with for 10 weeks. This way my first experience living on my own, and if it weren’t for my roommates, I wouldn’t have had the best time of my life half way across the world.
