Bloggin´ It In Spain: Life in Salamanca

BY DANIELA VENEGAS
It´s now been four weeks here in Salamanca, Spain. Every morning I wake up not being able to believe that I am actually here! As I struggle to get out of bed, the sun gently flickers on and off through my window where people walk ever so slowly through the streets that smell of freshly made pastries and strong coffee. The town is small, calm and comforting because there is no sense of hurry or stress. Children ride on their father´s backs and small puppies stay beside their owners. Around two in the afternoon mothers and fathers pick their children up from school with a baguette in hand for the days ¨Comida¨ served at 2:30 everyday. It may take some getting used to by us students because unlike our lunch, it is the biggest meal of the day, consisting of three courses.

Around eight it is likely to walk through the streets and find bars full of people enjoying their last meal of the day and a glass of either wine, sangria or beer. Everyone is out at night; the young and the old.

You may ask what exactly is a tapa. They vary in options but typically tapas are a slice of baguette with some kind of aged, dried meat, cheese or potato medly. There are also many spreads to choose from also accompanied by a slice or two of bread. Tapas are simply small appetizers that come with a drink and can be shared amongst friends and family for a little taste. I am sure Spain will delight any newcomer because it is a change in scenery, lifestyle and culture.
